HOW TO GET RID OF BLACKHEADS
November 3, 2008I have always firmly believed that the most effective and efficient way of attacking a problem is by getting to its roots. Therefore, before we discuss getting rid of blackheads, let us first come to a clear understanding about what they are and how and why we get them.
As a result of damaged pores of the skin or due to dead skin cells that had not been flushed away, pores become clogged and trap excessive buildups of naturally occurring oils in the skin that normally flow to the surface. As those clogged pores eventually open up to expose the trapped oils to oxygen, the oils darken in color and become the universally loathed “blackheads.” Some people are more prone than others to the formation of blackhead and their predispositions are augmented by accelerated hormonal activities which increase oil production as well as by the use of oil-based skin products.
To prevent or decrease the development of blackheads, you should:
- Keep creamy, greasy and oily cosmetic products away from your skin.
- Cleanse your skin with a gentle water-based acne cleanser.
- Avoid using bar soaps because the ingredients that retain their shapes have a tendency to clog skin pores and cause skin cells to flake off and clog pores even further.
- Moisturize your skin but do it moderately because moisturizers can also increase skin oils.
- Exfoliate to flush out dead skin cells which clog pores, and opt for products that contain 1% or 2% beta hydroxyl acids (BHA or Salicylic Acid) which penetrate through to the lining of the pores or alpha hydroxyl acids (AHA) which exfoliate only the surface of the pores.
- Retinoids which are forms of vitamin A preserve the health of skin pores and therefore improve the flow of oils. Retinoids are usually found in prescription salves.
- If your skin is oily, absorb excess surface oils with clay masks or cosmetic oil-absorbing paper.
Now that we understand what blackheads are, how they form and how to prevent them, let us take a look at how to remove them. After all, one or two may have sneaked up on us in spite of our most earnest efforts at preventive measures. The most commonly used method is by squeezing it out. And I know as well as you do that, although we’ve all been warned against it, we have all done it at one time or another. But let us now review the proper way to do it and, in fact, it may even be helpful to your skin to remove the “yucky stuff” because it relieves some of the pressure within the affected pores.
a) Begin the process by removing dead cells with a mild scrub or an exfoliate.
b) Gently dry your skin with a soft towel.
c) Soften the blackhead by treating it with a warm compress for ten to fifteen minutes.
d) Dry your face again with a soft towel.
e) To prevent slippage and cause a wound or a tear of the skin, wrap the tip of the two fingers that will be squeezing the blackhead with tissue paper.
f) Apply even pressure to both sides of the blackhead by pushing down and then upwards.
g) If this method fails after one or two attempts, do not pursue it any further for the time being or you will damage the skin and cause it to scar. You can always come back another day when the blackhead is more “ripe.”

DO ANTI AGING SKIN CARE PRODUCTS WORK
November 3, 2008When we reach a certain age we all begin to show some signs of “maturity” and it shows where we want it to show least of all; on our faces for the entire world to see. So, we begin to search the countless shelves of cosmetic counters for that age-old (please forgive the pun) mythical fountain of youth which is also known as an anti aging skin care product that will rejuvenate our facial skin and will reverse the dermal aging process to what it was ten, twenty or more years ago. Please do not feel bad — I am right up there with you along with my own wrinkles and jowl and liver spots!
The fact that you are here and now to read this article means that you are bright enough to wonder whether or not anti aging skin care products really work. And if you are bright enough to wonder about the effectiveness of anti aging skin care products, than you are smart enough to come to the right conclusion all by yourself. I will present you with a handful of facts and you do your own figuring. Is it a deal? O.K. let us get started.
Fact number one is that the anti aging skin care product industry is enormous and it is predominantly comprised of multi-national cosmetic giants that have mega billions of dollars to spend on eye-catching packaging, on extensive marketing and on advertisements that reaches deep into our psyches and under our skins.
Fact number two is that there is little to no supervision from an authoritative entity such as the FDA and no legal requirements or regulatory standards that the anti aging skin care product companies have to abide by. In short, just about anything can and does go into those beautifully presented anti aging creams, lotions, jells, oils and so on and on and on. Thus, many of these products that people so faithfully apply to their tender skins are useless waists of good money. Many other anti aging skin care products have been proven to cause temporary or permanent damage to the skin and / or to one’s health in general. And still others are carcinogenic!
Fact number three is that the cosmetic companies that produce the anti aging care products are not compelled to prove the truth behind their claims for ironing out creases, for tightening sagging skin, for eradicating age spots, for smoothing out the cottage cheese effects of cellulite and for generally making old skins look young again. They are also not obligated to substantiate or authenticate the ingredients listed on their products with concrete evidence.
So, do anti aging skin care products work? Congratulation! You have come to the right conclusion. The overwhelming majority of anti aging skin care products, whether they are produced by the cosmetic giants we all know or by smaller producers which are rarely heard about, do not work. In the best case scenarios, anti aging skin care products simply fail to do what we would all like them to do and they, certainly, do not fulfill their promises for magical results. In the worst case scenarios, they are dangerous, carcinogenic and not fit for our human skins.

WHAT DO BRITISH CONSUMERS REALLY WANT
November 3, 2008
Allow me, if you please, to present you with two very different but equally interesting surveys and the results they came up with.
Survey No. 1:
An international grocery and general merchandising retail chain based in the UK which is one of the largest of Britain’s retailers both in global sales as well as the domestic market, has recently conducted a survey on beauty and cosmetic products. In this survey, this retailing giant approached the British beauty media and more than half a million women to vote on their favorite cosmetics. The results were astounding as the disparity between the two groups was miles apart. It was apparent that the beauty media a.k.a. as the experts in the field of beauty and cosmetics and the average consumer representing the public at large disagree when it comes to choosing their favorite brands and products.
To demonstrate just how different the two groups think, when they were asked to nominate the greatest beauty icon of today and of all times, the British media chose blondes in the shape of Julie Christie and Kate Moss while the public favored the more voluptuous brunettes such as Elizabeth Taylor and Catherine Zeta-Jones. Can the contrast get any bigger?
Personally, I am gratified and pleased to learn that consumers are still following their own heart and intuition and are not as influenced by the media as I feared that might be. Conversely, though, I am saddened that the media is too arrogant and too absorbed in its own self-importance to listen more closely to its audience — the ordinary consumer who, in essence, drives the market and the economy. Developers, producers and marketers of cosmetics need to redirect their focus from the beauty media who professes to know it all, and pay closer attention to the consumer who really and truly does know it all.
Survey No. 2:
A recent Gallup Poll (Gallup is an official entity that conducts public opinion polls around the world and disperses its results in the media) concluded that in today’s highly stressful world, women are subjected to greater tensions, new pressures, closer deadlines and added hostilities in the workforce as well in the general public more than ever before. Women, therefore, crave and appreciate friendliness, kindness and common courtesy as well as good manners wherever and whenever they come across them. Even more important than good and reliable cosmetic products and fair prices, women want to be treated with the respect and the gentle touch that they deserve. Surprisingly, an overwhelming majority of British women believe that shopping for cosmetics in drugs stores affords them more of the civility and good manners than in the larger department stores, specialty shops and door-to-door sales people. Unfortunately, drugstores fail to train their polite sales personnel to also become more knowledgeable about cosmetic products, their checkout was labored and slow and the ambience was poor.
So what do British consumers of the female gender really want? They want kindly service that is well versed in the widely varied product lines which are readily available on their attractively set shelving, sales people who can advise and counsel them and quick and efficient checkout counters at the end of the transaction that will not totally drain their purses. British consumers want the shopping experience to be as nice as or nicer than the products they ultimately buy.

WHAT IS ACNE AND HOW TO FIGHT IT
November 3, 2008
Our skins, yours and mine, are endowed with oil glands that produce oil that normally lubricates our skins. When the oil ducts become blocked, due to the overproduction of oil, different types of small swellings and bumps appear on the surface of the skin in the form of blackheads and whiteheads which are also known as open and closed comedowns, pimples, or cysts. The sum total of these unsightly afflictions is the dreaded acne.
Areas of our skin which have the largest population of oil glands have the greatest tendency to erupt with acne and those are the face, chest, shoulders and back. Just to give you a rough idea, the estimated count of oil glands in our foreheads alone is 2,000 per square inch.
Acne is most often seen in teenagers and on through their 20s, but they certainly do not hold a monopoly on such conditions because younger kids and older adults can have acne as well. Dermatological studies and statistical research have shown that:
ü Nearly 80% of teenage boys and girls have acne and since it is so common, it has come to be accepted as a normal part of puberty.
ü On the average, acne last approximately three to four years for most of those who are affected. However, in 15% of the cases, acne can persist for as long as eight to twelve years.
ü In around 5% of those afflicted with acne, the condition will persist beyond age 25 and up to age 40.
ü Some cases of acne, particularly in women, may not start until they are 25 years old.
ü 70% of young women will experience flare-ups of acne before their menstrual period and that is believed to be brought about by a rise in their androgen (male hormone) levels.
ü Due to the fact that male hormones often promote the development of acne, the most severe cases of these conditions are found in men.
ü Women who have unusually hairy bodies and faces as well as abnormal and irregular periods are also at intensified risks of acne outbreaks. They should be medically evaluated for hormone levels.
For the most part and particularly when it comes to fighting acne, I am very big on home remedies and I would like to share some of them with you. Before I do, however, I would like to suggest that you supplement them with an increased water intake, regular exercise, plenty of fresh air and good nutrition which includes at least five servings of fresh fruit and vegetables:
ü Applying toothpaste, not jell, to your acne affected areas overnight will reduce the swellings.
ü To wash away access oil and avoid aggravating inflamed acne, wash your face twice a day with warm salt water.
ü Massage your skin with the skin of a washed lemon before rinsing with lukewarm water.
ü To speed up the healing of acne, apply pure Aloe Vera juice twice a day.
ü Grind orange peel with some water to form a paste and applying on your acne affected areas. This one, by the way, happens to be my personal favorite.
ü And do you want your pimples to disappear like pure magic? Grind some nutmeg with milk and apply on your affected area.

CARING FOR “SENSITIVE” SKIN
October 30, 2008
Make no mistake about it; everyone’s skin has a measure sensitivity on some level. After all, skin is a living, breathing organ that has to be treated with gentle respect. We cannot logically expect that anyone’s skin will withstand consistent abuse such as exposure to harsh chemicals and pollutants without reacting in some pathological way. So why do we categorize some skin as “sensitive” while other as “normal”? Well, although every skin has a threshold to irritants, skin that is usually classified as “sensitive” has a lower threshold or it is quicker to react than most.
“Sensitive” skin has low tolerance to environmental factors such as cosmetics and toiletries, and it seems to display a constant hyperactivity by reacting in one way or another. Most frequently reported reactions of irritated “sensitive” skin are scaling, peeling, blistering, swelling, reddening, or discomforts such as tingling, itching, stinging, tightening and burning. And, to make matter worse, these conditions are further exacerbated by exposure to certain weather conditions, most particularly extremely arid or cold climates. Furthermore, “Sensitive” skin frequently becomes even more sensitive with aging and quite often “normal” skin turns into “sensitive” skin among menopausal and senior women.
If your “sensitive” skin is particularly delicate, you should always approach it with utmost caution. That does not mean that you cannot introduce cosmetics or toiletries but it does mean that it may take some research and trialing before you find the products that will please your skin. Because natural products are composed of molecules that are easily recognized by your skin, they are quicker to assimilated and metabolized. I, therefore, suggest that you only look for products whose list of ingredients contains only natural and organic components and no chemicals, acids or perfumes. But you must realize that your “sensitive” skin may still exhibit an irritable reaction even to natural products. Before applying any product to your “sensitive” skin, particularly to your “sensitive” facial skin, you should perform a patch test by applying a small amount of the product behind your ears or on the inside of your wrist. If after ten minutes the skin behind your ears or on your wrist shows no reaction, than it is safe to assume that the rest of your skin will tolerate it as well.
Having ultra “sensitive” skin myself, I came to realize that “sensitive” skin should be taken care of from the inside as well as from the outside. And the following are my conclusions:
- Reduce or, better yet, eliminate the intake of alcohol, caffeine as well as spicy and greasy foods.
- If you are a smoker, stop it and stay away from other smokers as well.
- Increase your intake of vitamin E and C, beta carotene and selenium. These are antioxidants which, according to many studies, neutralize the free radicals (pollutants) that are toxic to our skin as well as to the rest of our organisms.
- Reduce, control and manage your stress level as much as you possibly can.
- Use sunscreen UVA/UVB protection with a minimum SPF of 15 and apply it daily. Opt for a gel which tends to be non-oil based.
- Apply moisturizers before retiring every night and try out such essential natural oils as chamomile, lavender, neroli, rose or sandalwood.
- Do not use exfoliates, do not wash your face more than twice a day and use only mild, soap-free cleansers.
- Always remember that less is better — the fewer products you use on your skin the healthier it will be.

HOMEMADE FACIAL MASK
October 30, 2008Today’s cosmetic counters are flooded with countless facial masks; masks that cleanse, masks that nourish, masks for the young, masks for the old, masks for dry skin, masks for oily skin, masks for normal skin and so on and on and on. So, with so many available masks why am I here to suggest that you make your own cosmetic facial mask? That’s easy. The reason I suggest that you make your own cosmetic facial mask is due to the fact that it is easy, it will always be fresh without additives or preservatives and it is much more economical. Furthermore, chances are that your kitchen is already stocked with the ingredients and tools that you need for the process, so there will be no need to go out shopping. And one more issue that is always a decisive factor for me and it may be for you as well; you always know exactly what has gone into the mask you make yourself, whose hands have touched it and whether or not it was prepared under the same hygienic conditions that you personally approve of.
Having said all that I did so far, it is my turn to ask you a question. Why not treat yourself to a homemade facial mask? It’s a facial indulgence you will enjoy and it will leave your face moisturized, exfoliated and glowing with health. Try it once and you will, no doubt, be hooked for life.
Let us take a look at a few of my favorite homemade facial masks:
1. Honey and Avocado Face Mask. Is your skin dry? Exfoliate, cleanse and moisturize it with the following nourishing products:
60 grams of ripe avocado flesh
25 grams of fresh orange juice
5 grams of pure acacia honey
5 grams of molasses
5 drops of chamomile essential oil
Combine all the ingredients by hand or a blender. Add more orange juice if the mixture is too thick and, using your fingers, apply to your face and neck. Leave it on for at least 30 minutes and then rinse off with warm water.
2. Oatmeal Face Mask. This face mask will not only purify your skin but it will also give you a sense of peace and relaxation.
1/2 cup of oatmeal
1 whole smashed ripe avocado
1/3 cup of pure honey
Mix mashed avocado with honey and continuously add the oatmeal. Apply to your face and neck and leave on for 15 minutes before washing it off with warm water.
3. Peel-Off Mask Recipe. This mask will peel off your blackheads and possibly your whiteheads as well. If you have “sensitive” skin, rinse it off instead of peeling and do not use it in the midst of an acne flare up.
1 tablespoon of unflavored gelatin
1 ½ tablespoons of cold milk
1 egg white
Vitamin E Oil (from a capsule or a bottle)
Mix the unflavored gelatin with the cold milk over a very low flame until it melts. Remove from the flame and set it aside to cool. Add the egg white and mix until it becomes smooth and let it cool further. Apply a thin layer over your entire face, omitting the tender skin around your eyes. Wait for it to dry for approximately 30 minutes and peel off gently. Then rinse your face with lukewarm water and apply the vitamin E oil.

HOW TO MAKE SKIN LOOK YOUNGER
October 30, 2008Life is very paradoxical or is it just people that are paradoxical? Whichever the case may be, the paradox which I am referring to is that when we are young we all want to be older; we try to look and act above and beyond our age. As soon as we reach a certain stage of chronological maturity, we want to be young again; we want to feel young and, most importantly, we want to look young.
You who are striving to camouflage the grey in your hair with dyes and tints are most likely also trying to reverse the aging process of your skin. And who can blame you? Everyone wants beautiful young looking skin, why should you be any different? Unfortunately, it is not easy because you will have to battle against very powerful forces; biological, pathological and environment.
- The pathological force is the easiest to deal with because it merely requires that you bring your entire body to a state of physical and emotional health by committing to a lifestyle that promotes good health.
- The biological force is somewhat more difficult to conquer. There are evasive procedures such as surgery, various dermal peels and a variety of injections. All these procedure are very costly and have possible dangerous side effects. There are also countless cosmetic products in the market today but you have to do much research and trialing to arrive at the one that works as well as it promises and your skin tolerates it.
- The environmental force is unchangeable, at least in our lifetime. You cannot change the climate pattern that plays havoc on your tender skin, you cannot avoid the free radicals and you cannot deflect the ultraviolet ray. What you can do is try to protect your skin as best as you can with specific intake of nutrients and sunscreens.
So, what can you do to make your skin look younger? I suggest that you, first and foremost, look for natural and organic product. But beyond that …
- Clinical tests have discovered that creams that contain Coenzyme Q10, Cynergy TK and Phytessence Wakame which are easily absorbed into the skin, stimulate your body to produce the collagen and elastin aging has depleted from your skin. Why? Because these two proteins, collagen and elastin, give skin the elasticity and firmness that you desire.
- Get more sleep, even an extra hour each night will do the trick but you should have at least 7 hours. Sleep deprivation gives you dark circles around the eyes and dulls your skin.
- Hide some imperfections of your skin with liquid foundation makeup but do not forget to moisturize first.
- Your neck will show more aging than your face. Do not forget to daily protect it with a broad spectrum SPF 30 and a good moisturizer.
- Be sure that 25% of your daily intake of calories comes from good fats such as olive oil, avocados, flaxseeds, canola oil, fish and nuts.
- Eat five or six servings of vegetables a day plus two or three whole fruits.
- Get 10 to 20 minutes of sunshine every day but don’t forget to apply sunscreen to your face and hands.
- Quit smoking and stay away from second hand smoke.
- Reduce your intake of alcohol, caffeine as well as refined, processed and greasy foods.
- Eliminate stress and negativity and get daily exercise.

Busting Myths about Make-up
October 29, 2008Personally, I consider the act of applying makeup as an art form. If and when you wear makeup that you apply it yourself; you are an artist — a makeup artist. The products that you use as your makeup are your artistic tools and materials while your face is the canvas. As an artist, you deserve the freedom of self expression and the liberty to explore your very individual creativity. No one, not even the so called experts, has the right to tell you what you “must never” or “should always” or “may” or “many not” do with your makeup to your own face. All that needs to be left up to your own personal choice.
Through the years I have come across countless pieces of advice about makeup offered by “experts” who, in many instances, were not all that knowledgeable. I consider such unfounded guidance as myths and I would like to share a few of them with you here and now:
- Not everyone can wear red lipstick. That is absolutely incorrect. You and everyone else can wear red lipstick. You might want to tone it down or choose one of many different shades of red that makes you most comfortable and fits your style, your mood and the occasion.
- Applying mascara to your bottom lashes casts a shadow and should be avoided. That makes absolutely no sense. If you are applying mascara to your top lashes you should not omit the bottom ones. Mascara casts shadows only when it runs or smears, but if you use a waterproof and smudge proof product there is no issue.
- You are either a “cool” or a “warm” color person but you cannot be both. Excuse me? Of course you can. You can wear whichever color you choose to wear at any given time and you can mix and match if you choose to do so. You might have personal favorites but that is your own individual choice that must not be dictated by anyone else. And if you wish to wear unconventional and outrageous colors, I congratulate and applaud you for “stepping out of the box.”
- Lightly spraying water on your face will freshen up your makeup. No! Please don’t do that to yourself unless you want your makeup to run.
- Confine your use of makeup products to one brand. Why? Unless you are using a product that is harmful to your facial skin, do you think your face will be able to tell the difference? And if it could tell the difference, do you think it would care?
- Paler skin requires darker foundation. Firsts of all, if your skin is pale you must see a doctor because you are sick. Healthy people may have fair skin but never pale. Fair skin does not need to be darkened any more than dark skin needs to be lightened. If you are fair-skinned and wish to brighten it up a bit, you could use some blush on your cheeks but that is all you need.
- Heavy makeup is for after dark hours. There is no such thing as “daytime makeup” versus “nighttime makeup.” Wear your makeup in a way that makes you feel most comfortable and don’t worry about the time of day or night.
Enjoy the process of putting on your makeup, be comfortable with it and have fun with the results.

Better Skin Diet
October 29, 2008Although there is absolutely nothing wrong with wanting to look good, taking proper care of your skin is not merely a matter of vanity because there are also many health reasons to be considered. First and foremost, your skin is a major organ just like your heart, liver, lungs and brain are. As a matter of fact, your skin is the largest organ of your body and as such, it benefits from the same nutrients that benefit your internal organs. Secondly, your skin is an external organ that, like a two-way mirror, reflects and displays what is going on inside your body as well as the environment outside it. If I may for a moment compare your body to a book, with your skin being the book cover and your internal organs the textual contents of the entire book, than you can most definitely judge this book by its covers.
Research has shown time and time again that consuming nutritious foods will result in optimal health of the entire body and that, of course, includes the skin. It has also been discovered that certain foods can aggravate and magnify certain medical conditions of the skin and that protein and certain vitamins and minerals are invaluable to improving and maintaining skin health.
There is no magic here — good food equals good skin. It is as simple as a well balance diet that is rich with valuable vitamins and minerals such as vitamins C and E which protect the skin from sun damage and help reduce damage in skin cells caused by the harmful free radicals that expedite its aging; vitamin B-complex and biotin which form the basis of skin as well as hair and nails; and vitamin A which maintains and repairs skin tissue. Researchers and dermatologists recommend that your daily food intake should include at least three ounces of whole grain bread, cereals, rice, crackers or pasta; a wide variety of fruits and vegetables that include more dark green and orange vegetables; foods rich in calcium such as milk and other low or non-fat dairy products; and lean meats, poultry and fish.
For your benefit and my own, I have compiled a list of ten delicious foods that you will love and so will your skin. Shall we call each one of them Skin Yummy?
Skin Yummy 1 – Avocado. A ripe avocado is creamy, nutty and delicious and is rich with essential oils and B-complex vitamins that nourish your skin from the inside as well as from its outside.
Skin Yummy 2 – Mango. This sweet tasting fruit contains more than 80% of your daily requirement for vitamin A and it is low in calories.
Skin Yummy 3 – Almonds. A single serving of almonds will give you 150% of your daily requirement of vitamin E.
Skin Yummy 4 – Acerola Cherries. Just one Acerola cherry provides you with 100% daily requirement for vitamin C.
Skin Yummy 5 – Baked Potatoes. Eating a single baked (not fried) potato will endow you with 75% of your daily requirement for copper which works along with vitamin C and zinc to produce elastin fibers that support the structure of your skin.
Skin Yummy 6 – Mushrooms. Mushrooms have an abundance of riboflavin (vitamin B2) that is part of the essential B-complex for skin tissue maintenance and repair.
Skin Yummy 7 – Flaxseed Oil. Flaxseed oil is one of the best sources of essential Omega 3s.
Skin Yummy 8 – Wheat Germ. Wheat germ is very rich in biotin.
Skin Yummy 9 – Cottage Cheese. Cottage cheese is not only a good source for calcium but it also contains selenium that works hand-in-hand with vitamin E.
Skin Yummy 10 – Oysters. Oysters are rich in zinc.
Bon appétit and remember, you are what you eat so please eat what you want to be.
